In celebration of our 300th article we pay homage to photographer/film-maker and founder of Mirage Magazine, Henrik Purienne. No-one manages to capture the beauty of the female body and spirit only slightly the way he does. His work is highly erotic,  but not in a cheap way at all. “Very 70s playboy meets 80s national geographic”. He also shot some campaigns for American Apparel, only the good ones of course. The pictures are timeless, yet they hit the vein of our present beau ideal.

Interview with Esquire:

E: You started out taking pictures of your friends and girlfriends – is that just what girls look like where you from?
P: Sure I’ve been trying to get less attractive friends, but it’s tough in South Africa.
E: Are there any british woman you’d like to photograph?
P: If I could travel back in time, I would love to shoot Charlotte Rampling, Pattie Boyd, Sue Murray, Ingrid Boulting, Vickie Hodge and, of course, Marianne Faithfull
E: What is your definition of sexiness?
P: A nonchalant attitude, a genetic disposition, tanned skin, secretly being really poor or really rich, a hot ass, guilty feet. You know, the usual.
E: What is your favourite part of a woman’s body to photograph?
P: Mmm…it’s between her Soul and her Aura. Or wait, it’s her ass. Again. (Secretly it’s her face)
E: How do you make subjects feel relaxed when you take their picture?
P: I just call them aside and talk to them softly while stroking their hair.
E: How old are you?
P: Young enough not to care.

Each season rising designer Simon Porte Jacquemus constructs a female character who embodies the spirit of the collection. And while her look and mood changes from season to season, her loose hair, make-up free face, and broad smile are enviable constant. The photography is an important element in the communication of the young label. Their lookbooks give you kind of an amateur-homemade feel and connect to the audience on a personal level.

With his album only one month away, Kanye West performs a huge stunt to promote his new tune “New Slaves”. Well what’s the best way to promote a song that’s basically a ill creative rant hitting powerful people? Right, my thoughts exactly, you just project Kanye’s face on tall buildings in the biggest cities around the world at the same time and let him spit his verses on us slaves. The track is ill, a trill beat, kanye spiting hard verses pretty monotone and at the end Frank Ocean sings. Perfect song right? I guess we can expect him to perform this track on SNL tonight.

What began with a more than three years in-depth study of forms, colours and surfaces is now finally available in stores: DD01, the first pair of a series of eyewear as result of a collaboration between Berlin based label Mykita and the croatian born designer Damir Doma. What is striking about the new glasses is the usage and the melange of precious material: the combination of cool stainless steel and warm natural horn creates both visual and haptic contrast reminiscent of the characteristic mixture of coarse, stiff fabric and soft flowing textures in Damir Doma’s collections.

The result is a futuristic look that elevates the recurring round motif in Doma’s work to another level.  At the same time, DD01 is a historic reference to the round glasses worn by the intellectual avant-garde throughout time.

Coming from a hippy village of Patagonia, Argentina, Marcelo Burlon made his name conquering the capital of fashion of the Old Continent. Working young as a Club Kid in the early 90s he progressively evolved into a full time event manager, becoming one of the most requested PR icon in the fashion field. Based in Milan, since 1998, he then transformed himself into a highly requested DJ, a reliable creative director and a successful business man.

To celebrate the arrival of his clothing line “County of Milan” in Spain he sat down with Daily Metal for an Interview:

“Tell me how everything started. I’ve read you came to Italy when you were 13 years old, in a small town on the Adriatic Coast…

First of all I’m from an Italian-Lebanese family which migrated in Patagonia in the 30′s. So I was born there. In the 90s we came back to Italy, and that’s where I started my career in discos. I quit school early because my parents couldn’t afford to pay my studies, so at 13 years old I was already working in order to help my family. I started as a Club Kid, doing entertainment for the club nights dressing cool and eclectic. I was part of a crowd of people active in the Riccione area (Marche and Romagna). At that time, it was all about ecstasy, raves, illegal parties in the pinewoods; you know, the 90s…

Tell me something about your “County of Milan” t-shirt line. Where did you find inspiration?

It’s all about me: Argentina and clubbing culture. That’s what inspired me to create those images. There are a lot of esoteric symbols as well as nature like condors, eagles, snakes. I researched many history books to find symbols of Mapuche and Pehuenche who where indigo people living in Patagonia that were fighting each other. I’ve learnt a lot about their cultures. It’s basically club and rave culture mixed with those ethnic elements. I guess this generated something new and special because people really like it and copy it.

On the subject: I’ve already seen a fake t-shirt of yours…did you know that?

Yes, I already knew.

How does it feel?

At the beginning I was really upset. I thought that it was so complicated to start a company, to settle all the legal aspects of this business and then it felt like someone just arrived stealing my work. I wanted to sue them but after some research I realized that this was just a small company that only re-printed the wings on a basic t-shirt. The work was so amateur and badly done that I didn’t even care to settle the lawsuit…

In a couple of your t-shirts you have an artwork inspired by the popular transexual model Lea T. Why that choice?

I love Lea. I accompanied her into her change of sex and identity as a friend. I think I’ve learned a lot of things in this process, maybe more than her. It was such a strong experience. Meanwhile her professional modeling career was rising with all the attention it generated. For me she’s family, I even have a tattoo with her name on me. Also, I do think she represents an important part of society nowadays, that’s why I dedicated two t-shirts to her. She’s the voice for million of people who can’t speak.

50 cent, Drake, Rita Ora, Pusha T, Devendra Banhart, a lot of superstars are already wearing your t-shirts. Do you gift them or do they buy it?

They all buy it! Except for Devendra who’s a friend of mine.

Any plans to expand your brand?

Yes, many plans, but I can’t tell you yet… ”
